The wedding invitation sets the tone of your wedding, so if you’re planning a formal affair, here’s a breakdown of how to properly word your invitation.

Guess Who’s Invited

1.Who is hosting the Wedding?

If both sets of parents are hosting the wedding, begin the invitation by writing the bride’s parents followed by the groom’s parents.

Example
“Mr. & Mrs. John Anderson &
Mr. & Mrs. Michael Smith”

If the bride and groom are hosting the wedding:

Example
“Anna and Jason”

Or

“Together with their families, Anna & Jason”

2. Request

This line requests the guests presence at your wedding.

Example
“Request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their children”

Or

“Request the pleasure of your company at the marriage their children”

If the bride and groom are hosting the wedding:

Example

“Request the honour of your presence at our wedding”

* “Request the honour of your presence” is usually written if the ceremony is in a place of worship.

3. The Names

If the wedding is hosted by the parents, write the bride’s first and middle name followed by the groom.

Example

“Anna Marie
to
Mr. Jason Alexander”

4. The Wedding Date & Location

Let your guests know the date, time and place of the ceremony. Traditionally spell out the date.

Example
“on Saturday the seventh of July
two thousand and ten
at two o’clock
at St. Mary’s Church,
Ottawa, Ontario”

*Only include an exact address if the location is not well known.

5. The Reception

Let your guests know when and where the reception will be held.

Example
“Reception to follow at Galt Country Club
at 6 o’clock”

If you’re not serving a full meal, inform your guests

Example

“And afterwards for cocktails and cake in the Garden Room”

6. Ask Guests to RSVP
Include a separate reply card with the invitation.

Example

“The favour of a reply is requested by:
Seventh of June two thousand and ten”
M ______________________
_____________ Will Attend
_____________ Will Not Attend
_____________ Number of Guests

Or

“The favour of a reply is requested by:
Seventh of June two thousand and ten”

M_______________________

__ Yes. I will be attending
Number of persons attending _____________

__ No. I am unable to attend

The End Result
Once you’ve completed all the steps, your formal wedding invitation can look something like this:

Mr. & Mrs. John Anderson &
Mr. & Mrs. Michael Smith
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their children

Anna Marie
to
Jason Alexander

on Saturday the seventh of July
two thousand and ten
at two o’clock
at St. Mary’s Church,
Ottawa, Ontario
