WHAT THE HECK IS MUDDLING?

-Bartending techniques 101-

Muddling, or to muddle, is the process of using a muddling tool to mash, crush or combine ingredients in the bottom of a cocktail glass. Common ingredients to muddle are herbs, sugar, and fresh fruit or vegetables. The idea is to create a paste out of the ingredients which you than mix with a sprit to take on a hint of extra flavour. The paste is than filtered from the drink for a fresh taste or left in the drink for texture and colour.

What is a Muddling Tool?
A muddler is like a small wooden shaped dowel with one large rounded end for mashing.

A popular South American drink that you have to muddle is the “Caipirinha”. This popular drink is considered the official drink of Brazil and is especially popular around the time of carnival, so you could say it’s a party drink.
