The season 11 finale of American Idol last night took a surprising turn when 3 people walked away as winners. Though Phillip Phillips took away the official title, former contestants, Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, also took home a special title: engaged.
Young surprised DeGarmo with a nationally televised proposal during the finale episode. With the help of the Idol crew, Young was able to bring DeGarmo on stage and amongst the dim lighting usually reserved for revealing the results, present her with a yellow diamond and gold engagement ring reminiscent of her favourite flower – the sunflower.
Neither won American Idol, but both have gone on to have careers in music with DeGarmo also pursuing acting. The couple moved in together in January.
The couple has not yet had a chance to start planning the wedding, but fans can be certain that their musical connection will be a centrepiece.
